How to Successfully Get a Japan Tourist Visa in Qatar? | Visa Guide for Filipinos

May 15, 2017

Japan has been one of every Filipino’s dream destinations. We wanted to go there for various reasons such as to see the cherry blossoms, taste the authentic Japanese cuisines, ski during the winter, experience Japan’s heritage and a whole lot more. But in order to make that “dream” of getting there a reality, the first step that every Philippine passport holders should do is to apply for a visa (apart from saving).

On this post, I am going to share with you my personal experience on applying for a Japan tourist visa here in Doha. Unlike in the Philippines, you will have to submit your requirements directly at the Embassy of Japan instead of going through an agency. Below are the steps that I took to successfully get that visa stamped on my passport.

I. Visit the Embassy of Japan in Qatar website to check out the requirements and other information.

Most of the information that you will need for your visa application such as the Embassy’s office hours, visa type, list of requirements and sample forms are available on their website, which you can visit through this link. Just one note though, you need to be a resident of Qatar in order to be eligible to apply here, as they don’t accept application from non-residents.

II. Gather all the necessary documents

Once you know the requirements that you need to submit based on your visa type, nationality and purpose of travel, you must now prepare and gather all the necessary documents. I applied for a tourist visa without a guarantor and here are the documents that I submitted:

1. Original Passport – more than 6 months validity and with at least 2 blank pages left.

2. 1 Passport Copy – particularly the information page.

3. Visa Application Form – click here to download. If you need some guidelines on filling up the form, you may visit this page provided by the Embassy. Make sure to answer everything, don’t leave anything blank. If some parts are not applicable to you, simply write “Not Applicable”or “N/A.”

Since I don’t have a guarantor, this is how I filled up the Guarantor and Inviter portion on the 2nd page of the form.

4. Photo – passport size with gray, blue or white background, and taken within 3 months

5. A letter from sponsor in Qatar – Not needed if your sponsor here in Qatar is the Company where you work, no. 6 below is already sufficient. But if your sponsor is your husband or parents, then you need to provide one. I am not sure though if this is still necessary if you will be traveling with them. This letter needs to state that your sponsor does not have any objection or issues with you traveling to Japan. It should also have details such as passport no., Qatar ID no. and the purpose of travel. Below is the letter that I submitted. My sponsor here in Qatar is my husband and sadly he can’t join me on this trip.

6. Employment Certificate – Should have details such as your Nationality, Passport No., Qatar ID No., your  position in the Company, joining date, salary, purpose of traveling to Japan, duration of travel and return guarantee to Qatar.

7. Copy of residence permit on passport and copy of Qatar ID (both sides)  should have atleast 3 months validity

8. Schedule of Stay in Japan – click this link for the format. If you don’t have a final itinerary yet, it is fine, as long as you indicate on the activity plan column the specific places or attractions that you wish to see and visit in Japan. See example below.

9. Hotel reservation for the period of stay – In my case, I submitted an airbnb reservation document that was booked by my sister from the Philippines who was with me on this trip. The Embassy required me to submit her Japan tourist visa just to be sure that she is eligible to travel with me. The accommodation document must also bear or show your name especially if you will be traveling with others.

You can also try to reserve through Booking.com, they have an option where you can cancel your reservation anytime before the check in date.

10. Copy of flight booking – Your Qatar to Japan flight booking, but if you will not be flying directly from Qatar, then you need to provide your other airline reservation. I submitted 2 flight bookings, my Qatar to Philippines flight with Cebu Pacific and my Philippines to Japan flight with China Airlines, since I stayed in Manila for a few days before going to Japan.

11. Bank Statement for the last 6 months  This must be authorized and stamped by the bank. Take note that they are very strict especially with the deposits and the balance. You may be required to submit additional documents if you have loans or they may ask you to provide explanation for some cash deposits on your bank. The balance should be consistent for the last six months (Don’t attempt to deposit a huge amount of money before submission just to make it look good) and sufficient enough to cover your whole stay in Japan (For the show money, I would suggest at least QAR 1,000 per day/per person, just to be on the safer side).

12. Copy of previous visas  this can be Japan, USA, Schengen or UK visa if you have any.

In case you have a guarantor who will pay some or all of your travel expenses, you need to provide additional documents such as Letter of Guarantee, Guarantor’s Passport Copy and Bank Statement.

III. Go to the Embassy of Japan for document submission

If you have already completed all the necessary documents, then it’s time for you to go to the Embassy. Visa application is from Sunday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 12:00pm (8:30am – 12:00pm during Ramadan). In case you are not available to submit the requirements (applicable also with passport collection), you can let somebody do it on your behalf.

Upon your arrival, the security personnel will check your bags and you will leave to them your ID and mobile phones. Afterwards, proceed to the Consular Section. Once inside, you can directly go to the embassy official’s window or wait for them to call you. Hand them over all the requirements then wait for around 10 to 15 minutes to know the result of their assessment. The embassy official may require you to give further documents or sometimes they will just ask you to explain some items on those you submitted. In case you cannot submit the additional documents that they requested from you, you can politely explain it to them and ask if you can submit an alternative instead.

If the documents you presented are complete, they will hand you over a receipt showing the date (usually after 3 working/business days) on when you can get your passport with the visa, as well as the amount of visa fee that you need to pay. Good news for us Filipinos, as our visa to Japan is entirely free.

IV. Collect your Passport and Visa at the Embassy

The timing of the passport collection is from 10:00am – 3:00pm (10:00am – 1:30pm during Ramadan) every Sunday to Thursday. Once you got it, check first all the information on the visa and make sure that everything is correct before you leave the embassy.

There you go guys, I hope this will help you. If you have further questions regarding the application, you may shoot a message below or you can contact the Embassy (see information below), as they will gladly assist you with your queries.

I guess that’s it, good luck, hope for the best, have fun and enjoy Japan.

          1. Hello!! What cover letter are you referring to?? Regarding the employment certificate, yes, it should be on the employer’s letterhead.. What do you mean by bank balance?

  1. Hello, Ms. Mi.

Thanks for sharing this post. I noticed you mentioned that applying directly is for residents only, please correct me if I’m wrong. “Just one note though, you need to be a resident of Qatar in order to be eligible to apply here, as they don’t accept application from non-residents.” – If yes, how should an OFW / non-residents apply?

Because we are planning for a Family trip and my sister who is an OFW in Qatar will most likely apply for a visa there.

    Thank you very much! 🙂
    Paula

    1. Hello Paula.. When I say resident, what I mean is those who have a resident permit or Qatar ID here.. Those who are under tourist or family visa, may not be able to apply, as one of their requirements is the Qatar ID.. If your sister is an OFW here, then she can apply here..

      1. I see. I also read in Qatar embassy website is that before a working visa, a resident permit should be secured as well. Thank you for the quick response, Ms. Mi. 🙂

  2. Hi Ms. Ingrid, this post is very helpful; thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I also would like to ask if you have an idea if it is acceptable to submit a bank statement here in Qatar for 3 months only because I just opened the account last month, September and I am planning to apply and submit my requirements come December this year. (That would be a record from Sept-Nov.) Thanks in advance!

    1. Hello Nikita.. Thanks for finding this post helpful.. Regarding your question, on Japan Embassy’s list of requirements, they specified that the bank statement to be submitted should be atleast 6 mos.. So, I am not sure if they will accept a statement that is less than that.. Maybe you have other bank accounts that you can present aside from this one.. Or you may try to reach the embassy through the numbers above to ask more about this..

  3. Hello Ms Ingrid, I am planning to visit Japan with my boyfriend who is US citizen. Can I also make him as my guarantor or include him in applying for my visa? Also I only have payroll bank account here in Doha. Is it fine if I use that or should I have my savings account here? Thank you.

    1. Hello Jackie!! You can use your payroll account as long as you have enough savings there to finance your stay in Japan.. As for the guarantor, I think he can be, though I am not 100% sure about it.. You can call the embassy to inquire regarding this.. Anyway, he will have to give you a guarantee letter..

  4. Hello Ms. Mi, your post is very helpful po for me. Thank you for taking time to publish this post. I have one question po, since my only bank account here in Qatar is my payroll, I usually, I mean actually I always tend to withdraw all the money and send it to the Philippines. What would be your advice? Should I get bank certificates in the PH as well? Since my account balance here in Qatar will not be sufficient for this trip? Please give me some tips, I can leave an ample amount of money din naman po from my salary and ask for bank cert but I’m a bit hesitant na since you’ve mention na depositing a big amount of money one time is not allowed. Please help, I’m a cabin crew btw. Thank you, hope to hear from you soon ☺️

    1. Hello Di!! Thank you for finding this blog useful.. Regarding the deposit, I didn’t say it is not allowed, rather avoid depositing a huge amount of money to make your bank statement balance look good.. If your trip wont be anytime soon, you can start saving every month on your payroll account.. Some says, you can present a printed online copy of you PH bank statement, if most of your savings are there.. I haven’t tried this though, to be sure, you may inquire directly from the embassy, I have provided a contact info above..

  5. Hello po Maam Ingrid! I’m planning to visit Japan.

    1. Hello!! Let us hope for the best! The result of your visa application will entirely depend on the assessment of the visa officer.. They usually check the transactions on your bank statement.. Even if you have enough money but your balance is not consistent for the past 6 mos, then they might see it as questionable..

    2. Hi, may i ask the result of your visa application? My husband and i are planning to apply with our 2 kids. Yung 10k ba is yung laman ng savings mo or salary na mismo yun?

    2. Hi, were u able to get a visa eventhough they stated that you a high risk of denial? All my docs are complete as well but they told me the same. Did u get approved or denied?

  8. Hi ate ingrid, i want to ask if its ok i will apply here in doha for tourist visa but i will be coming from Philippines going to japan? is it possible?

    1. Hi Kat! Yes, it is possible.. But you should show the embassy your ticket from
Doha to Manila and Manila to Japan air tickets.. I applied here in Doha, but I stayed in Manila for a few days before flying to Japan.. I mentioned about this on the blog.. Thank you..

  9. Hi Ingrid! I just want to ask if you might have any idea, is it still acceptable if I apply the visa here even if I’ll be coming from Philippines? I’ll be having my vacation this coming may-june. I’ll go home then me, my brother and my parents will all together fly to japan. My parents already have multi entry visas so and obviously flights are much cheaper from PH rather than coming from here in QA.

    1. Hello Celene.. Yup, you can apply here.. That was also my case.. I stayed in the Philippines for a few days before flying to Japan.. You just have to show your Qatar to PH and PH to Japan flight bookings to the embassy..

      1. hi maam ingrid me idadagdag lang ako sa bank account po mga magkano po dapat laman ng bank account mo in qatar riyal money

        1. Hello Rodel! To be honest, I am not sure how much you need to have on your bank account to get approved.. Many says that the money that you have on your account should be sufficient to cover your stay in Japan.. In my case, I have budgeted atleast QAR 1,000 per day of stay.. It is actually better, if you have more.. Hope this helps.. Thank you..

          1. one more question maam maria yung sa bank certificate yung ginagamit kung atm yung pinagsasahuran ko ngayon sa company ko dto sa qatar pwd ba yun yung gamitin kung saving ko po

      2. Hello I just applied for Japanese visa I was told to come back on 10 for pick up day with so amount of money will that mean they will give a visa?

    1. Hello Rodel!! Sorry, I cannot answer your question since I didn’t get my visa thru a travel agency.. Maybe you can get their contact info and ask the query directly from them.. Thank you..

  11. I’ve done every possible way I can, had more than 10k riyals on my savings, got my parents to sponsor me as well, but at the end of the day… I got rejected not once, but twice… why’s that? I’ve lost hopes of applying for a visa to japan here in qatar… Obviously, the consul wasnt fond of me. I’ll try to apply in the Philippines instead…

    1. Oh my!! Sad to hear about this.. Sometimes we really don’t know what they are looking for.. I also have a friend, who got rejected for Japan Visa here in Qatar, but when she applied in the Philippines, she got approved.. Hoping you can also get it in the Philippines..

      1. Really? I would really appreciate it if you could perhaps, ask your friend regarding what steps/documents or procedure she did to get a visa in the philippines? Please do, if ever, you could contact me po at cooletchachi@gmail.com.

I would really really really be grateful if you could help me with this.

        Thanks!
        Ilya

    1. Hello Nouie!! My visa was free because I am a Filipino citizen.. As for everything, I spent a bit more because our airfare was a bit expensive.. I believe it was around Php 50-60k..

  12. Hi Maria, do i need to book officially an air ticket as a requirement? Because we are travelling as a family all from Qatar and it would be devastating for me if i booked the tickets then denied to have visas in the end. Let me know thanks!

    1. Hello!! I understand.. According to Japan Embassy’s website in Qatar, one of the requirements is a copy of a flight booking for the entire trip.. To be honest, I am not sure if this means actual booking or a flight reservation will do.. My advice is to call the embassy and ask them, I have provided their contact info above.. Sorry, if I can’t directly answer your question..

  13. Good Day!

Gusto ko lang po itanong kung kelan kami mag-apply ng visa kung ang flight date namin is July 7-12 pa naman po? Is it April or May? And paano kung wala kaming savings account sa pinas? Lahat ng savings namin mag-asawa nandito sa qatar? Possible ba na ma-deny kami?

    1. Hello Kate! I think you can apply by May, just make sure that all your requirements are complete.. It is actually better that you have all of your savings on your bank account here in Qatar, as long as the money that you have there is enough to cover your intended stay in Japan.. Now, as to getting denied for the visa, I honestly don’t know what the visa officer is looking for.. But I guess, if you have all the requirements, then you have a higher chance of getting approved..

      1. Thank you for replying to my question. And also, is it safe to apply the visa by June if our flight is July? Because I just found out that my husband QID will expire on June and mine will expire on Aug. It will be less than 3mons valid according to the requirements. So we decided to renew our IDs on May and apply the Visa on June.

  14. Hi Miss MI,

I am here in Qatar under husband sponsor, we are planning to apply visa for Japan. Ask ko lang kung need ko pa mag provide ng bank statement, company letter etc… sya nmn ang guarantor ko although I am also working here.

    1. Hello!! I think no need na.. You just need to have a letter of guarantee.. But to be sure, kindly call the embassy, I have provided their contact info above.. It is best to get the right information from them, para hindi din kayo pabalik balik..

  15. hi Maria, ask ko lang po kukuha kasi ako ng bank statement ko this march 1 ibibgay nila ung feb 28 up to last 6months?, wait ko lng ung sahod ko para may Makita silang pera, pero may pera ako sa bank sa pinas pwde kaya pakita sa kanila ung mobile banking na may pera ako dun. nag call na aksi ako sa bpi d nila ma poprovide bank statement dahil wla ako dun. salamat po

    1. Hello Ian! If you think that your money on your bank account here is sufficient, then I guess there’s no need for you to submit your PH bank statement.. But if not, you may call the embassy if it is possible for you to submit an online statement from your bank account in the Philippines..

  16. Hi MI! I went yesterday to apply visa, officer required me to explain the credited amount sa bank statement ko which I can justify with proof, but he ask me also to provide statemen of my savings account in Philippines, are they looking for guarantee na may pera talaga ako to spend? Did they ask you same when you applied before? Should I apply it again after a month, but my flight is booked on 13April.

    1. Hello Jonas! They didn’t ask for my bank statements from PH.. You don’t need to wait for a month, I think your application is not rejected, they are just asking you to provide more documents.. Once it’s completed, you can go back to the Embassy.. And yes, they might be looking for some guarantee that you have money to spend once you’re in Japan.. Is it possible for you to get those bank statements from PH? If yes, call Japan embassy and ask them if they would need original and stamped copies or if you can just submit a statement printed online.. Let me know if you have more questions..

      1. The officer ask me to provide at least online bank statement, with log in page, I’m afraid they will reject my application if balance is less than 6digits in PHP.

        1. Oh! Isn’t the balance on your PH bank sufficient to cover your stay in Japan?? In my case, I have budgeted atleast QAR 1,000 per day of stay, and it worked.. Maybe you go back and try with the Embassy again..

          1. I have sufficient balance in my account here and in my savings account in Philippines, I will try again with compliance on what the iffice asked.
Thank you MI! God bless you.

  17. Hi Ms. Maria! I’m just wondering kung ano po dapat ilagay in the visa application form when it asks for “ID No. issued to you by your government” do we put in our Qatar ID No. or Passport No.? Thank you po.

  18. Hi Ms. MI.
My family are planning to visit Japan this April.
11 po kami. Mejo komplikado po ung sa situation namin kasi. Kami po ng Fam ko is andito sa Qatar, 3 po kami. And ung Brother ko and Wife nya nsa Canada. And the rest ay nsa Pinas. Our parents, My sister and her hubby and there in-laws. Ano po maiipapayo nyo kung paano or where kami dpat mag apply ng visa namin.

    1. Hello Jozell!! Sounds complicated nga.. Are you planning to visit the Philippines first before going to Japan?? If yes, and you think have ample time, like atleast 3 weeks, then you can all apply in the Philippines.. If not, let’s say you will go directly from Qatar to Japan, then I guess it is better for you to apply here.. Or you may ask your relatives in the Philippines to call an agency that assists in Japan tourist visa processing to give you more information regarding your situation..

  19. Hello Ms. Maria, thank you for sharing your detailed process in applying for a Japan Tourist Visa. Two questions though. First, just in case I got rejected in my first try, when is it possible for me to reapply again? Secondly, when is the best time to apply for a visa (e.g. 1 month prior to planned date of visiting Japan)?

    Thank you so much.

    1. Hello Rebecca! 1st Q: I’m not really sure when you can reapply incase you got rejected.. You may call the embassy to know more about this.. Check the contact details on the blog.. 2nd Q: I suggest applying atleast 2 or 3 months before your planned date to visit Japan, so you will have ample time if ever the embassy will require you submit further documents.. For now, don’t think about getting rejected.. Submit all the required documents, stay positive and pray.. 😊

  20. Hi,

I just want to ask, I’m also husband sponsor and working here in Qatar. Like you, I will submit NOC from my husband however for my bank statement tho they will see the salary deposit. Do you think I need to secure COE as well to justify it?

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hello!! It depends on who will be paying for your expenses.. If you will be the one paying for your trip, I suggest that you secure a COE from your Company, because it is required..

  21. Hi thanks for the detailed information! I want to ask, can I provide both my mom and dad’s bank statements and make them both my guarantor? I’m not a minor but I’m a student and my family is supporting my expenses. However, when I went to apply with my father’s bank statements which is stable and has more than enough balance to support my trip, they said it does not look good and thay I need additional bank statements if possible. So I’m wondering, would adding my mom as a guarantor and providing her bank statement work? Would really appreciate any information. Thanks!

  22. hi MI, just wanna ask if my balance was not consistent for the last 6 months? i am saving money every month, and my target is, by the time that i apply for japan visa, my funds will be sufficient enough (following your 1000QR/day estimate) for my 4day trip, do you think thats gonna be ok? thanks for your advice 😀

    1. Hello Chloe!! I think that is fine, atleast they will see that you are really saving for your trip.. What I mean by consistency is that, you should not make a huge amount of deposit just to make your bank statement look good..

  23. Hi Maria! Question, I will be applying for tourist visa, will the Japanese Embassy call my company? The employmeny certificate that I obtained doesnt have any contact number.. is this needed? Thanks!

    1. Hello Jose! I am not really sure if the embassy calls the company to verify information.. Does the employment certificate issued to you printed on the Company’s letterhead? If yes, then I guess it is ok.. But if you are in doubt, then I believe it is better to call the Embassy.. I have provided the contact info above.. Hope this helps.. Thanks

  24. Hi Maria,

Does the Qatar Id have to be 3 month valid from the day your applying for the visa or 3 months valid from the date of your travel. Eg : My Qatar id is expiring on 21/06/2018 and i want to travel on the 2nd of April 2018. But i will apply for the visa on the 1st of March . Is it ok.

    1. There’s no clarity regarding that, but based on my interpretation, it should be 3 months from the day you are applying for the visa.. Just to be on the safer side, I suggest you to call them.. You may check the contact information above.. Thank you..

      1. Hi ma’am good day… Pls let me know if ever I want to apply a tourist visa here in doha Qatar travel to japan I am Philippines I work here in royal family sheikh AL Thani family in doha.. Thank you

          1. Hay , I want to go japan From Doha at tourists visa . I see above description it is very long Process please let me know Easy process , and minimum how long it will be take to process .
            Email Adress: dipendrathakur301@gmail.com
            Contact no: +974 77802489.

          2. Hello!! Sorry, but this is the only process that I know and I just followed what the Embassy of Japan states on their website.. If you want to know an easy process, you may give them a call.. I have provided their contact information above.. Thank you..

    2. HI Maria, Thank you for your reply. I also need to know how long Is the Japan visa valid for once issued. I also don’t have a salary account here in Qatar but I have sufficient on going funds in my India account. If someone emails my updated bank statement from India with the stamp and sign on it will it be ok to take a colored print and submit with my visa documents.

      1. Hello Rochelle, the validity of your Japan visa will depend on the assessment of the embassy.. My visa was only valid for one month.. Are you working here in Qatar? I guess it is best to call the embassy regarding your concern.. I know they require original, I’m not sure if emailed copies are fine..

  25. Hi Ms. MI!

Hope all is well. Ask ko lang po if it is possible na Philippine bank statement ang ipasa ko or it should be coming from my bank here in Qatar?

    Thank you 😊

    1. Hello Maggie!! I think you should submit both bank statements, if ever.. For the QA bank statements, they are checking the salary that goes into your bank every month.. Now, if most of your funds is in your bank in the Philippines, you can submit it, but the bank statements should be original and stamped or signed by the bank, meaning somebody from PH should send it to you here.. I hope this answers your question.. 😊

  26. hi! tanong ko. lang po gaano katagal irelease ung passport after applicationike in your case po, how many days bago niyo nakuha ung passport with visa niyo? TIA!

      1. hi ms . Maria..sana po ok po kayo..:)..ask lang po sana ako, for employment certificate po, need po ba i.address sa Japan embassy at sabihin kung anu po yung purpose?.sana po makapagreply po kayo..thank you po and God bless..:)

        1. Hello Loucelle! Yes, I am ok, hope you are doing fine as well. For the employment certificate, you need to address it to Japan Embassy and you need to state the purpose (e.g. travel).. Usually, employers here in Qatar already know what information are needed on the employment certificate.. They even have templates for that.. Let me know if you need a sample, I can email you one..

  27. hi! there’s a question in the application form that asks your “ID no. issued by your government”, can I write my QID no. there? thanks 🙂

    1. Hello!! I think you should put there the IDs issued by the govt where you are a citizen.. If you are only a resident in Qatar, then I guess you cannot write your QID on that portion..

          1. Hello Archana!! If he is a resident and working in Qatar, then yes, he can apply for a Japan tourist visa at the Embassy of Japan in Qatar.. I think the requirements will be the same with the one I have listed above.. But if he wants to make sure, he can contact the Embassy, I have provided the info above.. Thank you..

  28. Hello sir,
Please does anyone know overseas Japan Online immigration department email? My question is, if a Japan company employs you, do you have to pay any money for an online Japan immigration department for the documents to be sent to you to the embassy for your visa?

    1. Hello! Thank you for that question.. But I think I cannot answer that.. Just call the Embassy of Japan to give you proper information regarding that.. If you are residing in Qatar, I have included the contact info above..

      1. hi maria! gusto ko ln magask if pde ko ilagay mom ko as my guarantor pa japan? though may bank statements ako kso sbe ksi nila need pa nila ng proof ng financial stability.

        1. Hello Kish! Yes you can put your mom as your guarantor.. I think you need to make a guarantee letter din, I’ve provided a link above.. And you need to submit her passport copy and bank statements din. Is she your sponsor here in Qatar??

Let MI know your thoughts!
